Debunking the Myth: Why AI Won’t End Product Management

AI isn’t replacing product managers. It’s hiring them.

Let me explain.

The End of the PM?

Since the release of GPT-3, people have predicted “the end of the PM.”

After all, designers and engineers can take up those tasks right?

The market data has shown something totally different.

PM has Retreated, But Not AI PM

The PM role itself retreated a bit from its highs in 2021 and has been flat.

But AI PM within PM has been growing.

Meaning other PM roles have been shrinking.

This is a Trend Across Tech

AI roles have been broadly growing across tech.

20% of the tech sector’s roles are now AI related generally.

And a similar sort of trend is playing out in PM.

AI PM Roles are Growing Rapidly

We’re seeing the amount of AI PM roles in places like LinkedIn grow rapidly.

And this tracks with the rest of tech, where the last few months hiring has picked up.

All the AI companies like Scale AI 4x’ing ARR to $1B are hiring talent.

I’ve teamed up with Dr. Nancy Li to write a tactical guide on How to Become an AI PM. Even if you have no experience, we’ll help you nail that job.

And AI PM Pays Well — Really Well

And they are paying up for this talent.

For offers being sent out right now, across the distribution, AI PMs earn more.

In fact, the median AI PM is earning more than the top 10%ile regular PM (cash only).

The End of PM? Not so Much.

At least for now, the demise of the PM has been vastly overrated.

Instead, PMs should consider picking up AI skills.

With the compression of one field has seen the rapid growth of another.
