โ€œI used to manage a team of 5, and the Google offer was the IC level!โ€

Iโ€™ve heard it often from people who just got a Google offer.

And itโ€™s a good illustration of a general rule of tech leveling in action:

This image from Levels.fyi is comparing compensation, and you can see this in action:

Wish, the smallest, pays the least (Senior PM $219K)
Docusign, bigger, pays more (PM L5 $289K)
Google, the most (PM $426K)

And this plays out in the titles:

A Group PM at Wish might be leveled a Lead PM at Docusign
And that same Group PM might be leveled a PM 2 at Google

FAANG are particularly stingy with their PM titles, because they pay the most at each level.

Hereโ€™s what Levels reports for Google:

โ€ข APM: $162K
โ€ข PM 1: $269K
โ€ข PM 2: $339K
Senior PM: $427K
Group PM: $725K
Director of PM: $1.02M
Senior Director/ VP $2.45M

This helps explain the vast differences in experience by level depending on where you work.
