FAANG ๐ฐ vs Titles ๐ท๏ธ
โI used to manage a team of 5, and the Google offer was the IC level!โ
Iโve heard it often from people who just got a Google offer.
And itโs a good illustration of a general rule of tech leveling in action:
This image from Levels.fyi is comparing compensation, and you can see this in action:
โข Wish, the smallest, pays the least (Senior PM $219K)
โข Docusign, bigger, pays more (PM L5 $289K)
โข Google, the most (PM $426K)
And this plays out in the titles:
โข A Group PM at Wish might be leveled a Lead PM at Docusign
โข And that same Group PM might be leveled a PM 2 at Google
FAANG are particularly stingy with their PM titles, because they pay the most at each level.
Hereโs what Levels reports for Google:
โข APM: $162K
โข PM 1: $269K
โข PM 2: $339K
โข Senior PM: $427K
โข Group PM: $725K
โข Director of PM: $1.02M
โข Senior Director/ VP $2.45M
This helps explain the vast differences in experience by level depending on where you work.
