Three Types of Job Searchers: Which One Are You?
You don’t need to match your job search with your friend’s.
(Even if the same principles apply.)
In coaching job search candidates, I consistently find meta-level focus to be the problem getting in their way.
I have figured out that they’re taking advice for people who aren’t in their situation.
You can be one of the 3 types of job searchers:
Check out the deep-dive to learn more on what you SHOULD do.
1-Hour Job Searcher
You should not just focus on customizing your resume, writing cover letters, and staying on top of every company.
Instead, you should:
- Process Inbound
- Occassionally Apply to Hot Jobs
- Increase Focus When Interviewing
2. The 7-Hour Job Searcher
You should not suddenly try to create work products, or out-prepare everyone for interviews, or apply to every job.
Instead, you should:
- Proactively apply to 1–3 jobs/week
- Get referrals where you can
- Practise mocks with friends to improve your interview skill
3. The 40-Hour Job Searcher
You should not just drop generic resumes, come to interviews with 2–3 hours preparation, and never do cold outreach.
Instead, you should:
- Create an outbound process
- Apply to a lot of jobs regularly
- Put more effort than everyone with work products and interview prep
It’s about adapting your search to you.
Not the other way around.
